Exploration of Gold Resources in Northern and Southern Somalia

Somalia is increasingly recognized for its rich but largely untapped mineral resources, especially gold. The Somalia Geological Research Association (SOGERA) plays a leading role in advancing geological research across the country. Although gold mining in Somalia is still at an early stage, mainly due to the absence of a comprehensive mineral policy, recent remote sensing studies and geological field surveys show strong potential for both artisanal and large-scale gold mining.

1. Gold Resources in Sanaag Region (Malxo Area)

The Milge area in the Sanaag Region of northern Somalia has emerged as a promising zone for gold exploration. Geological surveys indicate the presence of both alluvial and primary gold deposits. Alluvial gold is commonly found in riverbeds and surface sediments, making it suitable for small-scale and artisanal mining with limited equipment. In addition, studies have identified primary gold mineralization within bedrock formations, which could support long term and larger mining operations using modern technology.

Milxo’s geological setting, including fault zones and mineralized veins, supports the likelihood of significant gold resources. While exploration is still ongoing, early results suggest that the area could become an important gold-producing zone in the future.

2. Gold Resources in South Awdal State (Borama Area)

In the Borama area of South Awdal State, geological surveys have confirmed the presence of gold-bearing sediments. In 2022, SOGERA’s fieldwork identified gold in riverbeds and streams, creating favorable conditions for alluvial gold mining. There are also indications of primary gold deposits, which may allow for future hard-rock mining projects. Although exploration remains at an early stage, confidence in the area’s gold potential is growing.

3. Gold Resources in Southwest State (Baidoa Area)

The Baidos area in the Bay Region has also shown encouraging signs of gold mineralization. Both alluvial and primary gold deposits have been identified. Alluvial gold is easily accessible and suitable for artisanal miners, while deeper primary deposits may attract larger mining companies in the future.

The Role of SOGERA and Investment Opportunities

Gold mining in Somalia remains underdeveloped, but recent findings from Awdal, Sanaag, (Milxp), and the Southwest State highlight the country’s strong potential. SOGERA supports this growth by providing geological data, surveys, and expert guidance. As foreign investment policies improve, gold has become a key sector for development. SOGERA is ready to collaborate with international partners to responsibly develop Somalia’s gold resources.
